STEFAN HUGENTOBLER

Stefan Hugentobler works across painting, video, objects, music, installation and documentary film — multiple languages held together by a single underlying demand: that of matter, time and gesture.

Since 1983 he has exhibited paintings regularly while pursuing parallel musical projects, reflecting an artistic sensibility that refuses the boundaries of any single discipline.

His paintings are the result of a slow, exacting process. Through successive layers of colour, removal, washing and the weaving of material, the canvas becomes a territory in perpetual transformation. Construction and destruction alternate intuitively — sanding, scraping, stripping — confronting the painter with the fundamental possibilities of his medium.

Study trips to Morocco in 1999 and Barcelona in 2001 deepened his vision and enriched both his pictorial and photographic practice. In 2000 he turned to video, spending three years working as a television director and making several documentary films rooted in the art world.
